Three people homeless after fire destroys Springfield trailer

SPRINGFIELD – Fire left three people homeless Friday night after it swept through a trailer on Bunny Lane, firefighters said. No one was injured.

The fire, Springfield Fire Chief John Krapf said, had already collapsed the right rear corner of the structure and burned its way across the trailer attic from both eaves when firefighters arrived. A neighbor called in the fire at about 3:20 p.m., he said.

The trailer “was probably 400 feet off the road, so nobody would see it [the fire] until it was really brewing,” Krapf said Friday.

About 20 firefighters from Springfield, Lee and Kingman responded to the call, Krapf said. They cleared the scene about three hours later. The trailer was a total loss.

A woman and two children, both girls, lived in the trailer. They did not appear to be home at the time the fire was reported, Krapf said. He did not know whether they had sought shelter with the American Red Cross or relatives.

The fire was likely Krapf’s last as chief, although he will continue to volunteer with the department, he said. Joe Wood is expected to be named the department’s new chief at a town meeting today.

“It’s time to give somebody else a chance,” said Krapf, who has been a chief and volunteer for about a dozen years. He also works for the U.S. post office in Lincoln.
