NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Southern Maine broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth 4-2 in the second game of a baseball doubleheader on Sunday.
The Huskies won the second game 16-3 behind the pitching of lefthander Collin Henry of Penobscot. The George Stevens Academy product scattered three runs over the first three innings, then shut out UMass-Dartmouth for the next five innings before giving way to the Huskies’ bullpen.
In the first game, Anthony D’Alfonso, Ryan Gaffney and Jordan Berthiaume each had three hits to lead Southern Maine. Chris Burleson, Eddie Skiffington and Josh Mackey had two hits apiece.
In the second game, Gaffney tallied two hits and two RBIs while Gaffney added a pair of hits for the Huskies.

At Chandler, Ariz., on Saturday, former Rockland High standout Dom Morrill’s infield hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning plated John Lerner with the game-winning run for the Mules.
Colby finished its Arizona trip with an 8-2 record and already has surpassed its 2007 win total for second-year coach Dale Plummer.

Trinity wins 3 from Bowdoin
At Hartford, Conn., undefeated Trinity completed a weekend sweep by defeating the Polar Bears 4-2 and 5-0 on Sunday.
The Bantams edged Bowdoin 1-0 on Saturday.
In Sunday’s first game, Thomas DeBenedetto’s two-run double in the fourth inning rallied Trinity from a 2-1 deficit. Carter Barnard scattered seven hits in a complete-game pitching effort.
Jason Koperniak hit a two-run double for Bowdoin.
In the second game, Sean Killeen hit a two-run homer and Mike Regan pitched six scoreless innings for the Bantams.
On Saturday, Tim Kiely pitched a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks and James Wood hit a solo home run for the Bantams.
Carter Butland pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts over seven innings for Bowdoin.

Tufts wins 2 of 3 from Bates
At Medford, Mass., the Tufts Jumbos rebounded from an 8-6 loss to Bates College on Saturday to sweep the Bobcats 26-3 and 9-3 on Sunday.
In Sunday’s first game, Steve Ragonese went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and seven RBIs, including a grand slam. Brian Mahoney had three hits for Bates in the seven-inning game.
In the second game, Tufts scored six runs in the third inning to take control, with Corey Pontes contributing a two-run double. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.
On Saturday, Denis Hogan had two home runs, two singles, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the visiting Bobcats past Tufts on Saturday.
Sean VanderVliet scattered four hits and one earned run over seven innings, and Chuck Murphy-Romboletti came on in the ninth to earn the save and preserve Bates’ first win over Tufts since 2004.

At Malden, Mass., on Saturtday, Tim Corcoran’s walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the eighth lifted Suffolk to a sweep of its doubleheader Saturday.
Ben Grant-Roy homered and singled twice for Saint Joseph’s, while Wade Oliver of Owls Head doubled and singled and former Hampden Academy standouts Ian Lee and Pat Moran each homered.
In the first game, Steve Durant pitched a three-hit shutout for Suffolk, while Rory Gentile, Nick Martinho and Bobby Barrett each hit home runs.
Lee, Mike Burdin and Joe Douglass each singled for Saint Joseph’s.

Thomas wins 3 of 4 games
At Phoenix, Tbomas College of Waterville opened its season by sweeping D’Youville College of Buffalo, N.Y., 7-5 and 8-2 and splitting two games with Lawrence University of Milwaukee, Wisc., winning the opener 8-6 but falling 15-4 in the second game.
In the opener against D’Youville, Old Town’s Cory Estes allowed just two earned runs in six innings to earn the win. Tom Desjardins of Fort Kent and Sam Shain each had two hits for the Terriers, while Josh Nickerson of Stockton Springs scored twice.
In the second game, Jared Fieldsend had three hits and three stolen bases for Thomas, while Dan Philbrick had two hits and three stolen bases.
In the opener against Lawrence, Nick Schauwecker’s inside-the-park home run gave Thomas the lead for good in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, Thomas pitchers hit eight batters and also walked eight to aid Lawrence’s cause.
Desjardins and Nick Cloutier each had two hits for the Terriers.
Women’s lacrosse
Thomas 11, Becker 3
At Leicester, Mass., Mike Ross netted five goals to lead Thomas College by Becker College on Saturday.
Kolby Peckham scored three goals and posted two assists for Thomas. Gunner Siverly had two goals while Chris Vashon had three assists. Josh Collelo made 11 saves on 14 shots for the 1-3 Terriers.
Becker was paced by Josh Fask with two goals and an assist.
Johnson State 11, MMA 10 (OT)
At Castine, Mike Murphy scored the game-winning goal with 1:06 remaining in the second overtime to lift Johnson State College past Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday.
Billy Noyes led Johnson State with five goals and an assist. Evan Pestone finished with 15 saves in the victory.
Christopher Keiley paced Maine Maritime with four goals and two assists while Wade Mondoux had two goals. Patrick Jones made 11 saves for the 2-2 Mariners.
Middlebury 17, Colby 11
At Waterville, Mimi Schatz tallied three goals and three assists to lead Middlebury College by Colby on Saturday.
Blair Bowie and Whitney Wildrick combined to make nine saves for the win.
Becky Julian paced Colby with three goals and three assists. Kate Sheridan, Lauren Strazzula and Amy Campbell scored two goals apiece. Keryn Meierdiercks and Sarah Warnke combined to make eight saves for the 4-3 Mules.
