LEVANT – Selectmen last week awarded the contract to build a new fire station to J.M. Brown of Hermon.
J.M. Brown submitted a bid of $344,000 to construct the 100-foot-by-100-foot steel building with five emergency vehicle bays. Town Manager Scott Pullen said construction could begin as early as late May. The town will act as its own general contractor in the project, and officials hope to hire local subcontractors to complete the internal construction, such as plumbing and electrical work, he said.
Pullen said the town is serving as its own general contractor in hopes of saving money. By taking this approach, he said, the town cannot adhere to a strict timeline.
Residents approved in November spending $158,000 of the fire station reserve account and to bond $800,000. The fire station will be located on the same property as the town office on Town House Road.
