TOWNSHIP 7 RANGE 9 – A Sherman man was injured Saturday when his snowmobile struck a rock and ice on Millinocket Lake.

Justin Stevens was traveling with friends when his snowmobile hit a rock and ice that had become exposed by a drop in the water level, according to Deborah Turcotte, interim spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The snowmobile went airborne about 130 feet before landing, she said in a press release.

Stevens, who suffered back and shoulder injuries, was picked up by Patten Ambulance, according to Warden Scott Martin.

It is believed Stevens was taken to a local hospital, according to Turcotte.

Speed, changing trail and weather conditions, and limited visibility were factors in the accident, according to Martin.
