THORNDIKE – A Freedom man is listed in serious condition at a Portland hospital after a logging accident off Leonard Road on Sunday afternoon.
Richard K. Martin, 57, suffered head injuries when the Timbco tree harvester he was operating rolled over the edge of a gravel pit owned by Clayton Larrabee. Martin was trapped in the cab of the machine, which witnesses told police rolled over 1 1/2 times before coming to rest upside down, Waldo County Chief Deputy Robert Keating said Monday.
Keating said the accident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. Sunday while Martin was cutting trees on Larrabee’s property. The harvesting machine was on the top edge of the pit when it suddenly skidded over the side.
Deputy Scott Jones and members of the Unity Fire Department and Thorndike Fire and Ambulance rushed to the scene and extricated Martin from the machine. He was taken by ambulance to Thayer Hospital in Waterville and later taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he was placed in the special care unit.
Martin is expected to survive his injuries, Keating said.
