Scout looks to build handicap-accessible ramp

Old Town High School junior Christopher Melanson, 17, has launched a very ambitious project to help him achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

A member of Boy Scout Troop 76, his Eagle Scout goal is to build an American with Disabilities Act-compliant handicap-accessible ramp “onto the back of the Scout Hall, a building donated to the local scouts” at the United Methodist Church in Old Town, Melanson explained.

He wrote that the building is “used by a number of groups associated with the church,” as well as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.

Melanson believes all groups using that facility “would benefit a great deal from this project.”

He said that “this ramp will create a safe environment for anyone using the new Scout Building, and allow access to anyone who does not currently have access.”

To help him raise the $1,500 he needs to complete this project, Melanson is hosting a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the United Methodist Church, 744 Stillwater Ave.

He hopes you will attend and help him achieve his goal of equipping this much-used facility with a handicap-accessible ramp.

If you cannot attend the benefit supper, but would like to help in this effort, or for more information, call Melanson at 852-4086.
