So how has the record-setting snowfall in Aroostook County impacted the baseball and softball teams at the University of Maine-Presque Isle?
Not much, according to UMPI sports information director and women’s basketball coach Tracy Guerrette.
“The baseball team has only four home games scheduled and the softball team has two,” said Guerrette, who listed the chance of those games being played in Presque Isle as “doubtful.
“There’s really nothing that can be done. There’s a lot of snow on the fields,” said Guerrette.
The baseball team is scheduled to play back-to-back doubleheaders April 26-27 against Southern Vermont College.
The softball team is supposed to host Bangor’s Husson College for a twinbill on April 22.
Each team is playing a 27-game schedule.
The teams practice in the gym and have each have had spring trips.
The baseball team spent February break in Cocoa, Fla., enjoying their own spring training and the softball team has been playing games in Virginia this past week.
Leo Saucier’s baseball team entered Thursday with a 2-3 record while the softball team was 2-7.
Guerrette said softball coach Mike Carlos summed up the team’s mindset pertaining to a lack of home games by saying, “The kids don’t know any better. They’re used to it.”
Guerrette said the teams are “just happy to be playing on diamonds and not being in the gym.”
She also said these trips provide the players with a “great experience.
“Some of them had never been out of the state of Maine. The baseball team had a chance to visit New York City,” said Guerrette.
They visited the ESPN studios, Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty, she noted.
Oh captains, my captains
The University of Maine men’s basketball team has elected three captains for the 2008-09 season: Mark Socoby of Houlton, former Maine Central Institute postgrad Junior Bernal, and fellow guard Kaimondre Owes.
All three are guards while both Bernal and Owes are New York natives.
Socoby, who starred at Bangor and Houlton high schools, started all 30 games for the Black Bears as a sophomore this past season and was the team’s leading scorer (14.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.7).
Bernal, who played in 25 games despite a foot injury, was first on the team in assists (3.0) and third in points (10.8 ppg). He was also a captain as a sophomore this season.
Owes, a junior transfer from St. Peter’s College, played in 19 games and started 14 of them. He averaged 12.5 points and 2.4 assists per game.
