Machiasport man running for Legislature

MACHIASPORT – Republican Tony L. Maker has announced his candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives in District 32.

Maker, 42, is principal of the Elm Street School in East Machias.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maine at Machias and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Maine in Orono. He is a deacon and member of the Larrabee Baptist Church and co-director of Hands and Feet Down East, a nonprofit Christian organization whose mission is to meet emergency needs in Washington County.

“Washington County has a unique way of life,” he said in a news release, “and it is important to preserve that way of life while creating more opportunities for those who desire to live, work, and raise a family here without being taxed out of existence. None of the issues we face are stand-alone issues. The economy, education, health care … are all interdependent. Solutions need to be found that will positively impact all of theses areas. I believe I can help find those solutions. I will stand firm on family values and do all I can to represent my friends and neighbors here at home.

“Having spent over 40 days in Augusta over the past year has taught me the processes and procedures in the [State House], as well as the opportunity to meet many legislators,” he said.

Maker, a 19-year educator and former selectman for Cutler, lives in Machiasport with his wife and five children.

He may be reached by calling 255-6038 or e-mailing tonymaker@hotmail.com. His Web site is www.tonymaker.com.

House District 32 is made up of Eastport, Lubec, Whiting, Cutler, Machiasport, Machias, Roque Bluffs and Trescott Township.
