Thomas shuts out Becker; Maine softball gets sweep

LEICESTER, Mass. – Trista Morin and Jen Higgins each tallied two hits and two RBIs Sunday to lead Thomas College of Waterville to a 10-0 softball victory over Becker College.

Julia Lorenz pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits, with five strikeouts for the Terriers.

Mallorie Blakney had two hits while Kristy Clements drove in three runs for Thomas.

Maine sweeps Binghamton

At Vestal, N.Y., Alexis Souhlaris, Jordan McLain and Erin Iandoli each hit a home run to lead the University of Maine by Binghamton 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Black Bears (5-1 in America East) won the first game 12-3.

They capped the sweep with a 7-1 victory Sunday.

In Saturday’s first game, Kristen Calvetti had three hits and drove in three runs to back Jenna Balent’s four-hitter. Ashley Waters posted three hits and two RBIs. Kristin Allen had two hits and two RBIs while Whitney Spangler singled twice for Maine.

In the second game, Souhlaris pitched five innings allowing only one hit to earn the shutout for the Black Bears.

Terren Hall tallied three hits and three RBIs to pace Maine while Souhlaris and Calvetti each had two hits.

On Sunday, Jenna Balent pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing one unearned run, to collect her second complete-game victory in as many days. She struck out seven and walked two.

Spangler, Waters (two RBIs) and Calvetti (two RBIs) had two hits apiece for Maine with Waters, Hall and Kali Burham each belting a homer.

Megan Quinn doubled and singled for Binghamton.

Trinity sweeps Colby

At Hartford, Conn., Colby College opened NESCAC East Division play with 11-1 and 9-2 losses to Trinity College on Saturday.

Trinity defeated the Mules 3-2 on Sunday.

In Saturday’s first game, Carlie Minichino had an RBI double for the Mules.

Trinity scored all 11 runs in the first two innings.

In Saturday’s second game, Alex Essman and Minichino each had two hits for Colby while Alaina Clark and Mollie Puskar each drove in a run.

In Sunday’s game, Nicole Nardella hit a home run for the Bantams in a three-run fourth inning.

Essman hit a two-run home run to lead the Mules.

Tufts sweeps Bowdoin

At Medford, Mass., Tufts University erased a 3-0 deficit Saturday to win game one 5-3, then received a shutout from Izzie Santone in a 3-0 second-game victory over Bowdoin College of Brunswick.

Tufts completed the sweep of Bowdoin with a 4-3 victory on Sunday.

In Saturday’s first game, Trinity’s Casey Sullivan and Christy Tinker each homered.

Shavonne Lord hit a home run while Kaitee Daley posted a two-run single for Bowdoin.

In the second game, Tufts scored all of its runs in the first inning for the early lead.

Lauren Coven and Courtney LaPierre each had two hits to pace the Polar Bears.

In Sunday’s game, Tinker hit a three-run home run in the first inning to propel Tufts.

Kaitee Daley led Bowdoin with two hits.

Saint Joseph’s wins a pair

At Standish, Kiera Walsh pitched a four-hit shutout Sunday as Saint Joseph’s shut out Johnson and Wales 8-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Monks won the second game 14-1.

In the first game, Aly Ludwig led Saint Joseph’s with three hits. Kimball posted two hits and three RBIs while Kayla Soucy and Liddy VanderLinden each had two hits.

In the second game, Liz Jordan, VanderLinden and Megan Farrell had three hits apiece to pace the Monks. Jillian Kimball, Alyssa Dunn, Natasha Howard and Anna Willis tallied two hits apiece.

Castleton sweeps MMA

At Castine, Castleton State scored nine runs in the last four innings Saturday to outlast Maine Maritime Academy 10-9 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Spartans won the second game 18-3.

In the first game, Laura Rogers led Castleton State with two hits, two runs scored, two stolen bases and two RBIs.

Mallery Stanley paced Maine Maritime with four hits and an RBI. Sam Rheaume posted two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Rogers had three hits with three runs scored and four RBIs to lead Castleton State.

Stanley doubled, tripled and drove in a run to lead the Lady Mariners.

MMA sweeps Johnson State

At Castine, Amanda Barker pitched a no-hitter while striking out eight batters to earn the 8-0 shutout over Johnson State in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader.

The Lady Mariners topped Johnson State 8-3 in the second game.

In the first game, Mallery Stanley led Maine Maritime with three hits. Brittany Hunt posted two hits while Danielle Richard had a hit and two RBIs.

In the second game, Barker allowed no earned runs and struck out a school-record 15 batters.

Stanley tallied three hits and an RBI to pace the Lady Mariners. Nicole Poland and Megan Russell added two hits apiece.

Baseball

Southern Maine, R.I. College split

At Providence, R.I., Adam Ross of Spruce Head threw a seven-hitter, striking out six and walking one, and Collin Henry belted a two-run double in a decisive three-run third inning Saturday that enabled the University of Southern Maine of Gorham to salvage a doubleheader split.

Eric Thibault and Eric Fama combined on a four-hitter in the opener for Rhode Island College.

In the nightcap, Henry, Josh Stowell and Andrew Stacy had two hits apiece. Chris O’Connor doubled and singled for the Anchormen.

In the opener, Jordan Amorin’s two-run single and Peter Olson’s RBI double backed the pitching of Thibault and Fama.

Henry pitched a five-hitter.

At Norton, Mass., Sunday, Scott Guillerault hit a two-run double to cap a three-run eighth-inning rally that enabled Wheaton to extend its winning streak to 15 games and snap the Southern Maine’s at seven.

The Lyons, ranked 18th nationally in Division III, have won their last eight meetings with the Huskies.

Paul Malaguti and Ken Depasse had two hits each for Wheaton and Josh Simmons registered his fifth save, striking out the side in the ninth.

Chris Burleson had two doubles and three RBIs for USM. Penobscot’s Collin Henry and Andrew Stacy also had two hits each for USM.

Trinity takes three from Bates

At Hartford, Conn., Trinity College improved to a best-ever 19-0 by sweeping three games from visiting Bates College of Lewiston.

Trinity won Saturday’s game 6-0 before the Bantams swept a Sunday doubleheader by identical 10-3 scores.

On Saturday, Tim Kiely fired a seven-hit shutout and Ryan Piacentini and Matt Sullivan had two hits apiece to power the Bantams.

Erik Hood had two hits for Bates.

In Sunday’s first game, Chandler Barnard and Derek Anderson combined on a six-hitter and Barnard drove in three runs with two hits. Sean Killeen had three hits for the winners.

Denis Hogan had two hits for Bates.

In Sunday’s second game, Kent Graham and James Wood had two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Casey McCormack had three hits for Bates with Brian Buckley, Hood and Jake Simon collecting two each.

Husson, Castleton State split

At Winkin Complex in Bangor on Saturday, Ryan Arsenault’s 10th-inning triple delivered Ethan Guerette with the game-winning run as Husson took a 3-2 victory.

Guerette had singled and stolen second.

Castleton State won the nightcap 1-0.

In the opener, Sam Adolphsen pitched three innings of one-hit shutout relief to pick up the win.

Guerette had three hits and Ryan Arsenault had two for Husson.

Billy Bruneau had two hits for Castleton State.

In the second game, Kyle Brooks doubled home Brad Polcare, who had singled, with a first-inning run and Ken Cook made it stand up with a three-hitter.

Cook struck out four and walked one while Husson’s Arsenault was the hard-luck loser as he tossed six innings of four-hit, one-run ball.
