Trenton approves firetruck purchase

TRENTON – Voters last weekend approved purchase of a $225,000 firetruck.

About 80 people gathered Saturday at the local grammar school for Trenton’s annual town meeting, Administrative Assistant Janet Muise said Tuesday. There had been speculation about whether the firetruck purchase would be approved, but Muise said it passed 49-31.

With the approval, the town will finance $102,000 of the truck’s costs over a five-year period. The remaining $123,000 will be paid with surplus funds, revenues from Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. and impact fees.

Overall, voters approved a municipal operations budget of approximately $660,000.

The town’s school costs have yet to be determined because of delays in completing state education subsidies. Muise said a special town meeting on the local school budget will be held May 20 and a required confirmation vote on that budget will be held May 27. What the town’s tax rate will be remains unclear because of the undetermined school costs.

Voters also decided Saturday to move the date of their annual town meeting. Muise said that beginning next year it will be held on the first Friday and Saturday in May rather than the first Friday and Saturday in April in order to hold it later in the school budget process. That way, residents can have a better idea of what the town’s school costs will be when voters meet.

In elections last Friday, all the incumbents won re-election to their seats without challenges, according to Muise. Michael Hodgkins won another three-year term as a selectman, Kelton Muise won another three-year term as an assessor, and Terri Sullivan was elected to a three-year term on the school board.
