PORTLAND – The Boston Red Sox has assigned right-handed pitcher Miguel Asencio to play for the Portland Sea Dogs out of extended spring training.

Asencio, 27, takes the roster spot vacated by pitcher Chris Smith, who was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.). Asencio played for Houston Astros Triple-A team Round Rock (Texas) and Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas), going 2-6 with a 6.21 ERA. He has appeared in 32 major league games with Kansas City and Colorado, going 7-8 with a 5.12 ERA.
