Maine Huts and Trails
BANGOR – Maine Huts and Trails communications director Alexa Dayton will talk about a new network of huts, trails and waterways being developed in western Maine.
She will be the guest speaker at the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club’s Eastern Maine chapter meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Epic Sports, 6 Central St. The event was rescheduled from February, when Dayton was unable to travel to Bangor due to a winter storm.
“We have some exciting developments going on in western Maine and we are thrilled that it is coming to fruition,” Dayton said. “Maine Huts and Trails will provide access to the outdoors in perpetuity for the people of Maine.”
When completed, Maine Huts and Trails will consist of a 180-mile recreation corridor from Bethel to Moosehead Lake, with as many as 12 huts – each designed to accommodate as many as 40 guests. Dayton said the project was founded by Maine people with a vision for preserving Maine’s naturally beautiful remote areas while providing outdoor access to the public.
The Eastern Maine chapter of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club meets in Bangor each month and offers a presentation on an outdoor adventure or a topic of interest for those who love the outdoors.
The club’s activities take place statewide and members communicate via e-mail lists to announce volunteer-organized trips and spontaneous outdoor adventures.
Club activities include hiking, water sports, biking, skiing, snow-shoeing and everything from extreme sports such as ice climbing to more gentle sports such as walking or birding. New members and visitors are welcome to attend meetings. For information, visit www.moac.org.
