Empty Bowl Supper to benefit MOFGA

BELFAST – The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will hold its annual Empty Bowl Supper on April 26 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Miller Street. The event supports MOFGA’s El Salvador Sistering Committee work.

Each attendee can buy a Maine-made bowl, fill it with gourmet soup from Cleonice Bistro of Ellsworth and get energized with live music from The Toughcats, for $10 to support MOFGA’s work with Salvadoran farming communities and organizations.

Each year MOFGA’s El Salvador Sistering Committee and the Green Sanctuary and Social Justice committees of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast cook up an Empty Bowl Supper to raise money for the committee’s work. Those funds have helped bring a delegation of Salvadorans to Maine to tour farms, meet with community organizers and agricultural officials, and participate in the Common Ground Country Fair; have helped fund events relating to CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement, for MOFGA’s sistering organizations in El Salvador; and have helped with work to prevent mining companies from destroying Salvadoran sisters’ mountains and agricultural lands.

Empty Bowl events now raise millions of dollars worldwide to help combat hunger.
