Not only is CBS heading to outer Hammond Street in Bangor on Saturday to hold “Big Brother” auditions (info at Reality Bites at www.bangordaily

news.com), but the CW has recruited a cast member with Maine ties for its newest show, “Farmer Wants a Wife.”

Ashley (no last name given) lists her hometowns as Wells Beach, Maine, and Chagrin Falls, Ohio. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Ashley is a senior catering sales manager for the Chicago Marriott Downtown who’s looking for a man – a farmer, to be exact.

The comedic series connects city women with Matt, a third-generation Missouri farmer who’s lacking romance in his life. Matt’s a 2000 University of Central Missouri graduate who likes archery, deer hunting, boating, camping, fishing and outdoor activities.

I would say that a healthy Maine girl is exactly what he needs, but I’m not so sure Ashley’s shoe shopping hobby is what he’s looking for. Plus, she’s up against nine other women from across the country who have left the busy city life in search of some country love.

The ladies will have to impress Matt with their heart and ability to adapt and appreciate country life, or risk being sent back to the city. They’ll have to kick off their stilettos and help care for the farm animals, sew and attend country affairs instead of heading to the latest art show or new club.

Cheesy? Yes. Addicting? Yes.

In another local reality TV link, ABC has chosen WVII Bangor as one of 100 stations to receive $10,000 to support the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program.

As part of the network’s “Oprah’s Big Give” Affiliate Outreach Program, ABC stations across the country were invited to submit proposals for projects that would help their local communities.

Locally, the money will be used to help cancer patients get transportation to and from treatment appointments.

In the spirit of “Oprah’s Big Give,” Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset and Washington county businesses and residents are being challenged to increase the amount that Oprah has donated to help a worthy cause.
