BETHEL – A Bethel native has grabbed some record-setting air at Sunday River ski resort.
Simon Dumont, a freestyle skier and X Games veteran, broke the world record for highest air on a quarterpipe at his home resort on Friday by peaking at a height of 35 feet. A Norwegian held the previous world record at 32.5 feet.
Dumont had been shooting for the record since arriving from Sweden earlier in the week. He aggravated a knee injury when he missed a landing on Tuesday, sat out Wednesday because of injuries and then missed Thursday because of high winds.
On Friday, he finally broke the record in style by hitting a 900, a trick where the athlete spins 21/2 complete rotations in the air.
