UMPI, Colby divide pair Albany sweeps Maine softball in America East series

WATERVILLE – Jeffrey Ramsdell hit a two-run home run while David deKay had a two-run double in the second game Sunday as the University of Maine-Presque Isle beat Colby College 8-5 to earn a doubleheader split.

The Mules won the first game 13-1.

R.T. Tourek had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Colby College by the University of Maine-Presque Isle 13-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

UMPI defeated the Mules in the second game 8-5.

In the second game, Craig Cooper had two hits and two RBIs for Colby. Richard Newton tallied three hits for the Mules.

In the first game, Bobby Whelan pitched a six-hitter for Colby, allowing one run.

Tyler Delaney went 4-for-4 at the plate to pace UMPI.

Saint Joseph’s splits twinbill

At Standish on Sunday, Saint Joseph’s College scored at least once in each of the first five innings en route to an 8-2 victory over Albertus Magnus and a split of their doubleheader.

Albertus Magnus jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opener and cruised to a 6-2 win.

In the first game, Steve Carosella had three singles as Albertus Magnus reached Saint Joseph’s starter Pat Moran of Winterport for 12 hits but just two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Wade Oliver, Ben Grant-Roy and Dustin Spiller each hit a double for the Monks.

In the second game, catcher Ian Lee of Hampden had a single and a double with two RBIs while Luke Enman homered and doubled and Wade Oliver of Owls Head also hit a home run.

Moran added two singles and scored two runs for the Monks.

Trinity sweeps Colby

At Waterville on Saturday, Trinity remained undefeated on the season with a 14-0, 11-2 doubleheader sweep of the Colby Mules.

In the first game, Trinity scored three runs in the top of the first and cruised to victory. James Wood homered for the Bantams, while Craig Cooper singled twice for Colby.

In the second game, Wood added his second home run of the doubleheader in helping Trinity coach Bill Decker earn his 400th career victory.

Ken Kaufman hit a two-run single to pace Colby’s five-hit attack.

Middlebury sweeps Bates

At Middlebury, Vt., on Sunday, Mark Shimrock had six RBIs as the Panthers earned a 4-1, 10-9 doubleheader sweep of Bates College of Lewiston.

In the first game, Shimrock hit a three-run home run in the first game, and that was all the support Middlebury pitcher Jack Britton needed while throwing a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

In the second game, Erich Enns’ two-run homer in the fifth inning extended Middlebury’s 5-4 lead.

Trailing 10-8 in the seventh, Bates loaded the bases with no one out but managed just one run.

Jake Simon had three hits and four RBIs for Bates, while Denis Hogan had two hits and two RBIs.

Men’s lacrosse

Mount Ida 19, Maine Maritime 3

At Castine, Matt Savage and Leo Shidler each scored four goals Saturday as Mount Ida College defeated Maine Maritime Academy.

Mount Ida had a 14-1 lead at the half and received goals from 12 different players. Matt Vernik made eight saves in the victory for the 8-4 Mustangs.

Garrett Lake and Phil McNerney each tallied a goal and an assist to pace the Mariners. Patrick Jones stopped six shots for 4-5 Maine Maritime.

Softball

Albany sweeps Maine

At Albany, N.Y., on Sunday, the Great Danes scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Maine 10-9 and complete a three-game weekend sweep of the Black Bears in America East play.

On Saturday, Marissa Powell and Brittany Rose had complete-game pitching performances to lead Albany to a 9-5, 9-3 doubleheader sweep.

Amber Maisonet tied the game at 9-9 with a two-run double, then Nicole Kothe scored the game-winner on a single by Andrianna Walraven.

Melissa Corssino led Maine with three hits, while Ashley Waters had a double, a single and three RBIs and Alexis Souhlaris had a first-pitch home run in the top of the first and a single.

Maine built an 8-0 lead with seven runs in the third, a rally highlighted by two-run doubles by Waters and Kirstin Allen.

In Saturday’s first game, Maine jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead as Waters hit a three-run home run to highlight the rally.

Powell held Maine scoreless the rest of the way, striking out six over seven innings.

Michelle Connors homered and singled for Albany, while Whitney Spangler, Souhlaris and Allen each singled twice.

In the second game, Leanne Tillman doubled and singled and drove home three runs for the Great Danes, while Rose scattered nine hits while striking out eight and walking one.

Souhlaris had three hits for Maine, while Waters and Terren Hall each hit a solo homer.

At Waterville, Tufts University scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning on the way to a 7-1 victory over Colby College on Saturday.

Kim Miner pitched a four-hitter to earn the win for Tufts.

Colby scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Amanda Roehn doubled and scored on a single by Alyssa Lepore.

USM, UMass Dartmouth split

At North Dartmouth, Mass., Sabrina Sevigny smacked two home runs and knocked in four runs in the second game Sunday as the University of Southern Maine won 9-5 to earn a split of their Little East Conference doubleheader.

UMass Dartmouth won the opener 5-2.

In Game 2, Sevigny hit a solo homer in the second inning and cranked a two-run shot in the fifth to pace the Huskies of Gorham. Heather Gilman singled twice and Stacey Stuart hit a solo homer to back the pitching of Kristina Grondin, who scattered eight hits and struck out 10.

Kathleen L’Abbe paced UMass Dartmouth with two singles and two RBIs.

In Game 1, Amie Nickerson limited the Huskies to two runs on eight hits. Kate Kelly had two hits for the winners.

India Lowe and Sarah Deroche posted two singles each for Southern Maine. Stuart hit a two-run double.

Bates sweeps Fisher

At Lewiston, Bates scored 13 runs on 10 hits in the third inning en route to a 14-5 victory over Fisher in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday. Bates won the second game 14-2.

Val Beckwith paced Bates in the first game with a two-run home run and a single. Jackie Streeter hit two home runs and drove in four runs for Fisher.

Shayna Waldman hit a three-run home run for Bates in the second game and Stacia Saniuk doubled and had an RBI single.
