Master key among items stolen from UM dorm

A master key to the University of Maine’s Androscoggin Hall was among items stolen sometime Monday morning from a programming office in the residence hall. The building is home to about 250 students.

“Police officers and residence life staff members are maintaining an increased presence in the building until the locking system is completely changed, which will take until sometime tomorrow,” UM spokesman Joe Carr said. “At least one police officer will be in the building at all times and several residence life staff members to help ensure students are safe and their rooms are secure.”

Police are investigating the burglary that occurred sometime between 12:30 and 10 a.m. Monday.

In addition to the master key, which could open all of the doors in the building, an Epson projector, a stereo receiver, speakers and an iPod docking station were taken.

Some of that equipment was used Sunday night when residents watched the Red Sox and Yankees baseball game.

University of Maine Public Safety is investigating the incident and asks that anyone with information call Public Safety at 581-4040 or tell one of the residence hall staff or police officers in the building.

Information also may be submitted anonymously to the UM Department of Public Safety’s Campus Eyes Web site at www.umaine.edu

Bangor police pulled over a 19-year-old Hampden man Sunday night for driving with a missing brake light, but the officials said they found much more.

When Investigating Officer Tim Shaw of the Bangor police pulled over Seth Martin at about 9:30 p.m., he saw what turned out to be 16 grams of marijuana in four small bags, according to Bangor police Sgt. Bob Bishop. Martin also had a scale and drug paraphernalia in plain sight.

At that point, Shaw called in Officer Michael Jewett and his dog, Rex. Rex sniffed out “a lot more,” including unspecified narcotics and fireworks, Bishop said.

Martin was charged with three counts of possession of narcotics and one count of operating after suspension of a driver’s license. More charges are possible pending a review by the District Attorney’s Office. (Nok-Noi Ricker and Anne Ravana, BDN)
