Ellsworth father-daughter dance open to public

The enchanted garden is the theme of this year’s Ellsworth Rainbow Girls Assembly 9 Father-Daughter Dance.

That very special event is 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the New Lygonia Lodge on Bucksport Road in Ellsworth, and is open to the public.

“The dance is open to all girls, preschool through seventh grade, with their father, grandfather or father figure,” wrote assembly advisory board member Marcia Keenan.

The cost is $25 for a couple, and includes a photograph, snacks, disc jockey “and lots of fun,” Keenan added.

Tickets, however, must be purchased in advance, and can be obtained at Morrison Chevrolet, 121 Downeast Highway in Ellsworth, or by calling Keenan or Darlene Bearse at 667-2513.

Keenan explained that proceeds from the dance will benefit the organization’s kitchen fund.

“Rainbow Girls is a wonderful youth organization which is part of the Masonic fraternity,” Keenan wrote.

“Girls do many service projects to benefit their communities,” find success in school, “have a positive outlook on life, make lifelong friends and have the confidence to speak in public and carry, with them, lessons that they will use their whole lives. They have lots of fun in the process!”

Keenan hopes you will consider joining them for this very special father-daughter dance.

Mike Lange reports members of the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge are preparing for a busy weekend, and that you are invited to be part of those activities.

The Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge is sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive from noon to 6 p.m. Friday April 18, at the Skowhegan Community Center on Poulin Drive.

“Presenting donors may enter a drawing to win a financial planning package from Merrill Lynch, valued at $1,000,” Lange wrote.

For information, or to make an appointment, call 800-GIVE-LIFE.

Next, Lange invites you to attend an indoor yard sale, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, with light snacks available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Lodge, 21 Silver St., Skowhegan.

Tables may be rented for $10 each, or three for $25, and may be reserved by calling the Lodge at 474-3111.

Payment for table rentals can be “made in advance, or on the day of the sale,” Lange wrote. All net profits from the event will benefit the Elks National Foundation.

For information, call the Lodge; call Lange at 938-3975; or call Bibbi Alley at 474-2463.

The Rev. Suzie Gowie, pastor of First Congregational Church of Brooks, invites you to a sit-down turkey dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Varney Memorial Building, 24 Veterans Highway.

The cost is $8 per person, but you are asked to call 722-3615 to reserve your place, because seating is limited.

“Wear your Sunday best,” Gowie wrote, because “you will be served at your table.”

Proceeds from the event will help church members in their efforts “to raise funds to repair the steeple and replace the weathervane” of the church, Gowie explained.

We have learned that both Earl and Jackie Bartlett of Baring have been hospitalized recently at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and, to help the couple through this difficult time, a benefit potluck dinner is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the American Legion Hall on Calais Avenue in Calais.

Admission is $5, and free for children 10 and under.

For information, call Billie Parks at 454-2305.

The next in a series of events to assist, financially, with the recovery of Bucksport firefighter-paramedic Lance Sanborn, from injuries he suffered in an automobile accident, is a Knights of Columbus fish fry at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at St. Vincent dePaul Church Hall, at the corner of Central and Franklin streets in Bucksport.

The meal consists of fried haddock, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, rolls and homemade desserts.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children.

The next meeting of the St. Croix Valley Amateur Radio Club is 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the Methodist Homes Recreation Center on Palmer Street in Calais. Refreshments will be served.

Ann Carter reports that Roger Holst will offer “a PowerPoint presentation” of general interest to attendees.
