Speedway 95 Car Show
BANGOR – Dana Smith’s No. 99 truck was named Best of Show at the annual Speedway 95 Airport Mall Car Show held Friday and Saturday.
Jason Dorr’s Sport Four was honored as Best Display and Travis Beale’s Super Street team was called Best Dressed Crew. Danielle DeLuck’s Ladies Division crew finished second and the crew of Wally Gibbon’s Sport Four team was third.
Heather Phillips’ No. 88 car was voted best in the Half-Scale Winston Cup Cars in the People’s Choice Awards.
Jamie Rennebu won for the Ladies Division and Josh Curtis was best from Big Enduros.
The Saturday Trucks category was won by Dana Smith, Strictly Street’s best was awarded to the No. 27 of Wayne Parritt Jr., Travis Beale’s No. 39 was best in the Super Street division and Rowland Robinson Jr.’s No. 28 was named best among the Pro Limited cars.
The 2008 racing season debuts at Speedway 95 in Hermon on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., with the pretty car contest and racing slated for a 2 p.m. start.
Annual 5K Fun Run
ORONO – The Orono Public Library Foundation and the Peace and Justice Center will join forces to present the annual 5K Fun Run on Saturday, April 19, at the Hope Festival in front of the Maine Bear statue by the University of Maine Memorial Gym. Registration for the race is $5. The race begins at 10 a.m. The race starts at 11 a.m.
The library continues to raise funds for a new library, and the race is just one of many events this spring that will benefit the library fundraising campaign.
Kenduskeag River paddle and clean-up
BANGOR – Husson faculty member Greg Winston has arranged with Bangor Parks and Recreation Department to do a river clean-up the day after the Kenduskeag Stream race.
Winston, students and area residents will paddle from Six Mile Falls to Valley Avenue Park. The trip will be a class II-III whitewater paddle, with the option of running Flour Mill Falls and Valley Avenue bridge rapids, which rate as class IV-minus, if the stream is up.
Their main task will be pulling out broken gear and lost boats they will take across town to the Parks and Recreation maintenance sheds. They will bring trash bags for any smaller pieces found in the water or along the banks.
Those interested in participating in the cleanups should meet at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 20, in front of Newman Gym at Husson College.
Non-boaters may assist by joining an onshore foot-patrol to focus on areas where crowds may have left trash in their wake. For information, call Greg Winston, associate professor of English, Husson College, at 941-7018 or e-mail Winstong@Husson.edu.
3 on 3 basketball tournament
INDIAN ISLAND – The Eastern Maine Warriors will take part in the 3 on 3 Tournament at Penobscot Nation Boys and Girls Club on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20.
The format is three-game minimum, single elimination, pool play; maximum of five players to a team, open to first 20 registered teams. The cost is $70 fee per team if pre-registered by April 17, or $80 fee at the door. For information, call Scott at 570-6909.
Rifle association banquet, auction
BANGOR – The Penobscot County Friends of the National Rifle Association will hold its ninth annual fundraising Banquet and Auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Bangor Conference Center, Hogan Road. All tickets will be sold in advance and will not be available at the door.
The event has been held in the area since 1999. The event and three other annual events in Maine have funded more than $100,000 in youth marksmanship and firearms safety programs, shooting development, and conservation related programs in Maine. An equal amount has been contributed to fund similar programs at the national level.
