Legislature honors former BDN publisher

AUGUSTA – The Maine Legislature this week passed a joint resolution honoring the memory of former Bangor Daily News publisher Richard K. Warren, who died Feb. 15 in Bangor at the age of 87.

The resolution, approved Wednesday in the Senate and Thursday in the House, said that “the Legislature has learned with deep regret of the death of … Richard Kearney Warren, of Bangor, beloved husband of Susan Atwood Warren. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1944 and served on the USS Jack W. Wilke. He was the ship’s gunnery officer and was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant. He moved to Bangor in 1947 and began a long career at the Bangor Daily News, becoming publisher in 1955, a position he held until 1984. He served as president of the Maine Daily Newspaper Association and the American Newspaper Publishers Association. After retiring from the Bangor Daily News, Mr. Warren continued to serve as a consultant to the company. He was active in local affairs, serving on the citizens advisory committee on the reuse of the Dow Air Force Base, the advisory board of St. Joseph Hospital, the board of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and the board of Good Samaritan Home. He loved boats and hunting and was an excellent golfer. He will be missed by his loving family and many friends.”

The resolution was sponsored by Sen. Joseph Perry, D-Bangor, and co-sponsored by Democratic Reps. Patricia Blanchette, Michael Dunn, Sean Faircloth and Jacqueline Norton, all of Bangor.
