Obituaries can be a great source of genealogical information, and a wonderful remembrance of a loved one.
To see what a newspaper has to offer in obituaries online, go to its Web site. For the Bangor Daily News, go to www.bangornews.com or www.bangordailynews.com and click on Obituaries.
The Web page that comes up offers a section on Obituaries and Guest books for the last 30 days on the left-hand side of the page.
For older obituaries, those from the last few years, look at the right-hand side of the page.
You’ll see the word “Search,” underlined, near the top of the page. Click on that to bring up a page allowing you to search for obits by surname.
Once you plug in a surname, it will give you a list of BDN obits by that name for the last few years.
If you need to go back further than that, you’ll want to have an exact date so that you can check microfilm of the Bangor Daily News at facilities such as Bangor Public Library and the University of Maine’s Fogler Library.
For deaths that occurred in Maine, 1960-1996, use the State of Maine death index at www.maine.gov/sos/arc.
Another helpful resource is the Social Security Death Index at http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
You can look up deaths from the 1960s to a few months ago on SSDI, though the earlier ones offer only the month and year of death.
Fogler Library, by the way, has a good collection of daily and weekly newspapers from Maine on microfilm. And, the library is open evenings and weekends, especially when the University of Maine is in session. To check the library hours, call the recording at 581-1664.
Bangor Public Library has the Bangor Commercial on microfilm, as well as the BDN.

3429. COLE-WYMAN. Seeking parents, birthplace for Mary Elizabeth Cole, born about 1844, Maine, married Ralph Wyman. She died July 4, 1896, Chester. According to 1870 census, her parents were foreign-born, I suspect from Canada. Sandra Whittier, 23 Oak St., Rockland, ME 04841; pennyroyal@adelphia.net
3430. ALDRICH-ROYAL-JONES. I am a descendant of Charles Lynn Aldrich and Eunice Emily (Royal). I am researching my grandmother’s family line. Eunice Emily Royal was born Oct. 2, 1908, in Maine, the daughter of William Melville Royal, born Sept. 6, 1867, Maine, and Lillian Elizabeth (Jones), born April 13, 1881, Maine. I would love to be able to connect with any family members who may be researching these lines. Eunice Aldrich Robison, 344 Perkins Place, Bonnerdale, AR 71933; omaeunice@yahoo.com
3431. NEAL-SHAW. I need help on Daniel Neal, born Feb. 18, 1792, Plainfield, N.H. He married Polly Mary Shaw on Oct. 26, 1814. They had 11 children. Who were Daniel Neal’s father and mother, and where were they from? I have traced my father, James E. Neal, born Jan. 23, 1907, in Forest Station, Maine. My grandfather, Remeldo Neal, told my father they came from Ireland. How did Daniel Neal get here? I would appreciate any help. My grandfather, Remeldo, changed his name to O’Neal. Lorraine Dolores (O’Neal) Daveluy, P.O. Box 487, Island Falls, ME 04747.
