Ryne, Frazier power Witches past Warriors

NEWPORT – Sophomore righthander Amanda Ryne pitched a one-hitter in her first varsity start to lead the Brewer High School softball team to a 5-1 KVAC North victory over Nokomis in a mutual season opener Monday afternoon.

Ryne struck out seven and walked three.

The Witches broke through for five runs in the top of the third off Warriors ace Patrice Cianchette. Emily Frazier spearheaded the rally with a two-run single and Allie Defilipp had an RBI triple. Leah Jackson and Maria Liberatore mixed in RBI singles.

Autumn Slike walked and scored in the third and recorded an infield single in the fifth for Nokomis.

Bangor 1, Skowhegan 0

At Bangor, Sam Bedore scattered eight hits while pitching a shutout as Bangor opened its season with a victory.

Bedore struck out 13 batters and walked just one in outdueling Skowhegan’s Rebecca McCarty, who pitched a three-hitter.

McCarty struck out seven and walked three.

Mariah Cassum scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the second inning. She walked, went to second base on a fielder’s choice by Bedore, stole third base and scored on a passed ball.

Amy Hackett doubled for Bangor, while Cassum and Erin Dean each singled.

Megan Hancock hit three singles for Skowhegan, while Crystal Johnson singled twice and Sam Gray doubled.

Hampden 8, Mt. Blue 0

At Hampden, Lacey Littlefield and Michelle Wells combined on a one-hit shutout as Hampden Academy opened its season with a victory.

Littlefield went the first five innings, scattering no hits while striking out eight while Wells pitched the final two, fanning three.

Ashley Gott slapped a pair of two-run doubles while Brittany Luetjen knocked in a run with a single and doubled for the Broncos. Littlefield singled twice and scored three runs and Kaitlyn Haase contributed an RBI single.

Kelly Yardley singled for Mt. Blue of Farmington.

At Bangor, senior Jillian French allowed just one hit, two walks and hit two batters while striking out 11 to lead Bangor Christian to the shutout win over Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Whitney Holmes had two infield hits and scored a run for the Patriots and Chelsea Brasslett had an RBI bunt single. Beckah Smith singled and scored a run.

Casey McCloskey allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while fanning 12 for the Howlers. Ariel Vanadestine singled in the fifth.

Hampden 6, Mt. Blue 2

At Hampden, Brennan Perry hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to help pad Hampden Academy’s lead as the Broncos defeated Mt. Blue of Farmington.

Patrick Stephens tripled and added a sacrifice fly for the Broncos. Josh Tardiff hit a double and Shawn Smith had an RBI single in the first inning.

Tim Smith doubled and singled with an RBI for the Cougars and Scott Hilton had two singles and an RBI.

At Bangor, D.J. Gilley had two singles and knocked in two runs as the Penobscot Valley Howlers of Howland knocked off Bangor Christian.

Jared Theriault slapped a two-run single for the Patriots, while Jon Johnson doubled.
