Quilters join to celebrate guilds’ 30th anniversary

Members of Bear Paws and Orono Quilters invite you to join in celebrating their guilds’ respective 30th birthdays at their anniversary quilt show, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, April 25, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main St., Orono.

The admission donation is $3.

You will enjoy their quilt display in the sanctuary, an exhibit of antique and contemporary aprons, a teapot social, a quilt raffle to benefit several charities and a local food cupboard, the offerings of several vendors and their lunch counter.

Among the featured quilters will be Nancy Jordan of Orono Quilters, and you can also view the Project Linus display of Merlene Sanborn and a Quilts of Valor display of Carole Halteman.

Robin Long of the Bangor Y reports the next Caring Connections Bone Health Information & Discussion Group will focus on “the importance of exercise in maintaining health and quality of life as we age.”

The meeting should be particularly informative for older adults who have a fear of falling and may be tending to reduce their activities because of this concern.

The meeting is 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Bangor Y on Second Street and is free and open to the public.

The event is free, but preregistration is preferred for those wishing to attend Hollywood Science Movie Night, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Challenger Learning Center of Maine, 30 Venture Way, Bangor.

Teen and adults will watch segments of “Armageddon” and “Apollo 13” with information provided by University of Maine astronomer David Batuski, and former NASA Mission Controller Dick Cattelle.

Youngsters will see movie and cartoon clips and separate fact from fiction with the Center’s education director, Robin Kennedy.

Marine Environmental Research Institute invites you to hear Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute senior scientist, Dr. Deborah Smith, discuss “Strange Sea Floor Domes: Not All that Strange Anymore,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at MERI Center for Marine Studies, 55 Main St., in Blue Hill.

A wine and cheese reception precedes the lecture at 6 p.m.

Anne Erickson reports the Rev. Carolyn Bradley and members of First Congregational Church in Millinocket are hosting the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Congregational Christian Council of Maine, April 25-26, with approximately 100 adults and 40 young people representing Maine Congregational Churches in attendance.

The Rev. Thomas Richard, executive secretary of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, is the featured speaker.

The event includes entertainment by the East Orrington Congregational Church rock group, Modern Day Jeremiah, from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 25, at I Care Ministry Church in Millinocket.

This event is open to all youths attending the celebration and living in the area, Erickson wrote. A fee of $15 for adults and $7.50 for others covers all meals and activities.

A musical concert is 7:45-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, at First Congregational Church, followed by an All-Council Choir rehearsal at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday events include a breakfast, business meeting, the featured address, a banquet and the choir concert.

Theresa Gove of Stonington called to say she is working with staff of Harbor Cafe of Stonington to host a fish fry for her brother, Melvin Eaton of Deer Isle, who is recovering from a serious March snowmobile accident.

The dinner is 4-8 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Harbor Cafe on Main Street, and will feature door prizes and raffles.

The suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Ruth Perry of Clifton reports performers are needed for the Comins Hall Variety Show, Saturday, May 17, in Eddington.

“Five years ago, the first variety show was a tremendous success, and each year since,” Perry wrote, “that success has been repeated.”

To join this fun event to help make improvements to this 129-year-old building “so it may continue to serve the community for the next 100 years,” call Perry, now, at 843-5132. The show length is limited to 21/2 hours.
