WATERVILLE – Ryan Murphy earned the win in relief in the first game and then had a save in the nightcap as Colby College took 8-7 and 2-0 baseball victories over the University of Maine-Farmington in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

In the first game, John Lerner drove in pinch-runner Zak Starr with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Colin Riggs, John LaMantia and Ken Kaufman led the Mules with three hits apiece. Kaufman tied the game 7-7 with an RBI single in the seventh.

Kyle Shea paced UMF with three hits while Tyler Hanson hit a home run and Phineas Peake had a two-run double.

In the second game, Michael Cuqua hit his first collegiate home run for Colby while LaMantia added two hits.

Josh Garneau posted two hits for the Beavers.

At Gorham, Anthony D’Alfonso drove in four runs with a pair of homers and two singles as the University of Southern Maine rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat Thomas College of Waterville.

Chris Burleson also homered twice for the Huskies and drove in three runs and Josh Mackey added a homer, double and single. Josh Stowell singled twice and had two RBIs.

Nick Cloutier knocked in three runs with a double and two singles. Jared Fieldsend and Mike Chamard each singled twice.

At Gorham, Kristina Grondin fired a six-hitter, striking out a career-high 13, as the University of Southern Maine beat Saint Joseph’s College of Standish.

Grondin aided her own cause with a double and two singles.

Stacey Stuart drove in four runs with three hits and Sabrina Sevigny had two hits and three RBIs.

Anna Willis had two hits for Saint Joseph’s.

Husson sweeps Beavers

At Bangor, Tammie Arsenault and Caitlin LeBorgne combined to allow just six hits in two games as Husson College shut out North Atlantic Conference foe UMaine-Farmington 8-0 and 6-0 in a doubleheader.
