‘Sole Sisters’ raising funds for breast cancer event

The “Sole Sisters” are proud to announce that they will be joining thousands of others in raising money to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, Aug. 15-17, in Boston, to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust.

Each team member must raise a minimum of $2,200.

The “Sole Sisters” are Deb Scott, Dawn Huston, Ronda Chasse, Sue Gilmore and Laura Walker, all of Hampden; Emily Davenport, Bangor; and Shelly Beaulieu and Samantha Morneault of Madawaska.

The Sole Sisters are planning a yard sale for May 31, in Hampden, with all proceeds benefiting their effort.

The event is a three-day, 60-mile walk, and you can help these dedicated women reach their qualifying goal by contributing to, or attending, their yard sale, or by making a direct donation online or by mail.

Ann Carter of Charlotte, and other Friends of the Calais Free Library, remind readers that the Calais Free Library Second Hand Bookstore will be reopening for the season, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, next to Unobskey School on Main Street in Calais.

Sally Moir and John Benner have gone through “mountains of books” donated by local readers, and they are ready to serve you.

“The hours will be the same as last year,” Carter wrote, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Hardcover books are $1, and paperbacks are 50 cents, with all children’s books half the price of adult books.

Magazines, videos, records, tapes, jigsaw puzzles and antique books are also available, and Canadian currency will be accepted at par.

Brewer Middle School softball mom Jill Reynolds hopes you will stop by the BMS “B” Baseball and Softball teams’ annual indoor yard sale, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in the BMS Gym, 5 Somerset St.

Proceeds, Reynolds wrote, will “help purchase new equipment for the B teams, and to take care of the fields.

“There will be tons of great stuff for everyone,” she wrote, adding that, “with the long winter, I am sure everyone has Yard Sale Fever. Don’t miss this one!”

Executive director Joshua Campbell Torrance invites you to participate in spring cleanup day, at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Woodlawn Museum on Route 172 in Ellsworth.

Hannaford will provide volunteers with a picnic lunch, and the first 50 volunteers receive a free T-shirt.

You should bring a rake and gloves to help remove debris from Ellsworth’s largest park.

From Maine Forest and Logging Museum executive director Cathy Goslin comes word that Woodsmen’s Day, featuring college woodsmen’s teams and much more, is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Leonard’s Mills at MFLM on Government Road off Route 178 in Bradley.

Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 2-12, and free for museum members.

Competition, food, demonstrations and the entertainment of Clum Spencer are all part of this fun-filled day.

Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church is hosting a fundraiser supper, to help support church projects, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the church, 44 Kennebec Road.

Church secretary Paula Baines reports admission for the authentic bean-hole bean supper is $7 for adults, $4 for children and free for youngsters under 3.

You can also take home quarts of beans for $4 each.

Ron Knowles wrote the second American Jamboree’s Country Western Jamboree is 6-9 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Milo town hall.

Admission is by donation, and proceeds will help with renovations for the community Art Center.

The event features country, gospel and bluegrass music, and a 50-50 drawing.

Knowles added that “refreshments will be available and, prior to the Jamboree, food will be served starting at 4:30 p.m.”

Proceeds from food sales will benefit the Milo Recreation Department.
