Recent sunny days have every pet owner out and about, enjoying the warmth and sunshine.

Join others in this happy and healthy pursuit by entering the Animal Orphanage annual 5K Pet Run-Walk beginning with registration at 9 a.m. and the Run-Walk at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Old Town-Orono YMCA on Stillwater Avenue.

The fee is $12 for individual walkers and runners or $8 for a family of walkers. The first 50 individual entries receive a limited-edition T-shirt.

Animal Orphanage president Roberta Fowler welcomes “serious runners, the fun runners and walkers who bring their animals.” The animals must be leashed.

Awards will be given according to age categories and canine and feline awards also will be offered as you and your pet help support this no-kill shelter that serves Old Town and Orono.

Tyler Garrett reports the University of Maine Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps unit is hosting a 5K run to benefit Camp Capella, a camp for children with disabilities, on Phillips Lake in Dedham.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at the University of Maine Field House.

Garrett reports that the course will take “runners through and near scenic UMaine.”

The registration fee is $10, and all proceeds benefit the camp.

Leah Watson, executive coordinator of The Game Loft, an after-school youth center in downtown Belfast, invites you to a Charity Auction, with a preview from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the auction from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Tarratine Hall in Belfast.

The event includes food and refreshments, and Rosey Gerry of Lincolnville as the auctioneer.

You also may participate in a Chinese auction to help raise funds to support this outstanding, free, after-school program that is staffed six days a week by professionals and volunteers.

Geneva Frost e-mailed that a yard sale to benefit the Otis Habitat House is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Beech Hill Storage on Route 180, next to the Otis General Store.

“There are many items to view and great bargains,” Frost wrote of the event for which the rain date is Sunday, April 27.

The home is being built for the family of 10-year-old Nicholas Hovey who has cystic fibrosis.

The 2nd Annual Mount Desert Island Hospital Health Fair, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at MDI High School gymnasium, offers a variety of free health care screenings.

Brenda Hall reports that healthful cooking demonstrations begin at noon, and that Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department staff will offer iris scans for children.

Safe Kids Maine will conduct car seat safety checks; door prizes will be offered; and 50 exhibitors are expected to participate.

Cathy Dionne of the Autism Society of Maine invites you to participate in Walk for Autism from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, beginning either at University College of Bangor or University of New England in Biddeford.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and Dionne reminds us that we now know this lifelong, developmental disability occurs in approximately one of every 150 individuals.

The Walk for Autism is one of many fundraisers for ASM.
