BATH – A couple from Augusta have been sentenced for stealing credit cards from a 97-year-old resident at a nursing home where they worked and going on a two-month shopping spree.

Attorney General Steven Rowe said Friday that Joel Palmer Jr. and his wife, Shannon Marie Palmer, pleaded guilty in Sagadahoc County Superior Court in Bath to theft by unauthorized taking. Joel Palmer was sentenced to spend a year in jail, and his wife was sentenced to three months.

According to prosecutors, the Palmers stole the cards at Amenity Manor in Topsham, where they had been employed as aides.

They used the cards to ring up more than $9,000 in charges in more than 100 transactions, including purchases of a computer, video games and DVD rentals.
