WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Ashley Waters hit a home run, double and single with two RBIs as the University of Maine defeated Hartford 12-1 in the final game of an America East softball series Sunday.

The teams split a Saturday doubleheader, with Hartford winning the opener 1-0 and Maine edging the Hawks 2-1 in the second game.

In Sunday’s game, Kristen Calvetti hit a grand slam in the fifth inning that extended Maine’s lead to 5-0. Alexis Souhlaris added a single and a home run in support of winning pitcher Jenna Balent.

In Saturday’s first game, Brittany Stratton pitched a three-hitter as Hartford earned the shutout win thanks to an RBI single by Lauren Kamena in the fourth inning.

In the second game, Souhlaris hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to provide Maine’s margin of victory.

Terren Hall added a double and a single for Maine in support of Balent’s seven-hit pitching.

Husson 5-12, Bates 0-7

At Lewiston, Jenny Rollins hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and added a single to drive in five runs and lift Husson to a 12-7 victory over Bates in Sunday’s second game. The Eagles won the first game 5-0.

In the first game, Tammie Arsenault pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out four for Husson.

Rollins doubled and singled with an RBI for the Eagles. Dorothy Cameron and Cassie Berry singled twice each.

In the second game, Megan Bradstreet tripled and singled with three RBIs for Husson. Berry added a double, a single and two runs scored.

Alex Bethel paced Bates with a single and triple and three RBIs.

At Farmington on Sunday, Sarah Defilipp allowed one run on eight hits over seven innings to lead the University of Maine-Farmington past Lesley 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Beavers dropped the second game 6-5.

In the first game, Defilipp had a single and drove in two runs for UMF. McKell Barnes added a hit and an RBI.

In the second game, Barnes hit a two-run double while Breanna Conners posted a pair of hits for UMF. Megan Goodrow added a double and an RBI for the Beavers.

Keene St. sweeps Southern Maine

At Keene, N.H., Melissa Scata hit four singles and knocked in four runs to lead Keene State past the University of Southern Maine 7-4 in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Keene State won the first game 3-2.

In the first game, Keene State’s Jessica Starkey singled home the winning with a sixth-inning single.

Sabrina Mills doubled and singled to lead USM. Sabrina Sevigny had two singles and an RBI.

In the second game, Ashley Annis singled twice for Keene State. Sevigny had two singles for Southern Maine and India Lowe doubled.

Husson sweeps Bowdoin

At Bangor, Husson had two game-ending hits to sweep Bowdoin on Saturday. Husson defeated Bowdoin 6-5 in eight innings in the first game and 2-1 in the second game.

In the first game, Shawna Bell singled home the winning run in the eighth inning for the Eagles. Husson’s Megan Richard tripled and singled with an RBI. Cassie Berry and Bell each singled twice.

Molly Nestor homered and singled with two RBIs for Bowdoin.

In the second game, Berry doubled and singled and drove in both runs for Husson. Jenny Rollins also doubled and singled.

At Farmington on Saturday, Belfast’s Katelyn Ross tripled twice, singled and drove home to runs to lead UMF to victory in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Beavers completed the sweep behind five innings of two-hit pitching from Brewer’s Sarah Defilipp.

In the first game, Belfast’s Lauren Overlock added a triple, single and two RBIs, while Erin Porter of Bangor added an RBI triple.

In the second game, Kelly McDonough had two doubles and four RBIs for UMF, while Kasey McPhail had two singles and three RBIs and Renee Trafton of Corinth added two doubles and two RBIs.

At Newton Centre, Mass, Brett Conley scored four goals and grabbed four assists to spark Mount Ida College by Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday.

Paul Battipaglia added three goals and an assist for Mount Ida.

At Bangor on Sunday, Denis Hogan and Erik Hood each had three hits to lead the Bobcats to the road victory.

Brian Mahoney added a double, single and two RBIs for Bates, while Bangor’s Gordy Webb had two singles and one RBI and Tom Beaton and Rich Valotta also singled twice each.

Logan York of Presque Isle led Husson with three singles, while Brewer’s Jeff Miller had two RBIs.

At Farmington on Sunday, Michael Swan’s ninth-inning grand slam rallied Lyndon State to victory in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Hornets completed the sweep thanks to a go-ahead two-run double by Swan in the seventh inning.

In the first game, Lincolnville’s Mike Cummons had two singles and an RBI for UMF, while Rusty Schmelzer also singled twice.

In the second game, Kyle Shea of Bar Harbor had three singles and two RBIs for UMF.

USM 12-17, UMass-Boston 7-6

At Gorham on Sunday, Andrew deBerthune of St. Albans and Maine Central Institute pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief to lift the University of Southern Maine to victory in the first game of a doubleheader.

Collin Henry of Penobscot had three hits in the second game as USM earned its sixth win in the last seven games.

In the first game, USM scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the sixth to rally from a 6-2 deficit.

Chris Burleson tripled and singled twice for the Huskies, while Henry doubled and singled twice.

In the second game, Eddie Skeffington had three singles, a triple and five RBIs for USM, while Henry and Jordan Berthiaume each had a double and two singles and Anthony D’Alfonson had three singles.

Husson earns split with Thomas

At Waterville on Saturday, Ryan Arsenault pitched a complete game as Husson College salvaged the second game of a doubleheader against host Thomas College.

Husson won the second game 3-2 after Thomas had earned a 7-6 win in the opener.

In the first game, Fort Kent’s Tom Desjardins hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, his third hit of the game.

Dennis Graham had two RBIs for Husson, while Logan York of Presque Isle had two hits.

In the second game, Bill Shannon led Husson with two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Brian McGinley of Hermon and York each added an RBI.

Nick Cloutier led Thomas with two hits and a run scored, while Desjardins added an RBI.

USM splits with Keene State

At Gorham on Saturday, Southern Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to salvage a 12-7 victory in the first game of a doubleheader.

Keene State rolled to a 17-6 win in the second game.

In the first game, Jordan Berthiaume and Ryan Gaffney each had a double and two singles for USM, while Chris Burleson singled twice and Collin Henry doubled.

Joe Rousseau led Keene State with a double and two singles.

In the second game, Jamie Chevalier led Keene State with fggour singles, while Rousseau had three singles and three RBIs. Andrew Stacy doubled twice for Southern Maine.

At Lewiston on Saturday, Matt Ruane hit two home runs as Bowdoin won the second game of its doubleheader with the host Bobcats 16-7.

Bates won the first game 10-6.

In the first game, Alex Egelson had three hits for Bates, while Denis Hogan, Rob Patton and Alex Maulucci each had two hits. Reid Auger and Pat Duchette each homered for Bowdoin.

In the second game, K.J. Kozens also homered for Bowdoin, while Ruane and Kevin Zikaras each had three RBIs.

Alex Gallant of Bangor took the pitching loss for Bates, while former Bangor High teammate Gordy Webb hit his first collegiate home run.
