Responding to the letter by James H. Tweedie Sr., “Aborted Generation,” (BDN, April 18): Economist and winner of a John Bates Clark Medal Stephen Levitt attributes the dramatic drop in crime of the 1990s to the legalization of abortion. If women had continued to have unwanted babies, those children would be more prone to a life of crime. This is why crime rates dropped all over the country in the ’90s, when “might have beens” would have been entering into their criminal primes.
I don’t think we’re missing many doctors, lawyers or teachers from the fetuses who were aborted. Our economy is not suffering because of a population that might have been. It’s suffering because of our current administration.
