Bangor stabbing suspect to remain in jail

BANGOR – A local man who allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend with a knife on Saturday, stabbing her in the stomach two times, will remain in jail until his court date to face the felony charges against him, Assistant District Attorney Greg Campbell said Monday.

David Archer, 33, of Bangor was arrested at 8:29 a.m. Sunday at Acadia Hospital after the attack, which sent the 22-year-old woman into emergency surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

He appeared before 3rd District Court Judge Jessie Gunther in Bangor on Monday “charged with elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault,” Campbell said. “Judge Gunther set his bail at $100,000 surety or $20,000 cash with a number of different conditions.”

Since Archer is also on bail for a charge of receiving stolen property, a Class C felony, Campbell also filed a motion in Penobscot County Superior Court to have him held until his court date.

“Basically, he’s not going anywhere,” Campbell said, “at least for the near future.”

Archer “has a fairly lengthy [criminal] record,” the district attorney said. Over the years, he has been charged in the Bangor area with forgery, assault, reckless conduct, criminal trespass, failure to appear in court and aggravated criminal mischief.

The woman is in stable condition and remains at the hospital, according to Campbell.

The attack, which occurred on Hudson Street, was witnessed by a female friend of the victim. The two women had just stepped outside the home when Archer reportedly attacked the woman in an apparent jealous rage.

The couple had broken up two days before, according to Timothy Pendleton, husband of the female friend and a resident of the home.

Pendleton heard his wife screaming after the attack, ran outside and attempted to chase Archer, but was unable to catch up with him. Pendleton then carried the woman inside, called police and applied pressure to her wounds until ambulance crews arrived.

Doctors said the woman was stabbed twice, once below the rib cage and once in the liver, Pendleton said.

The woman identified Archer as her assailant before she was taken to the hospital, police said.
