AUGUSTA – A 25-year-old Augusta man faces sentencing after pleading guilty to stealing $10,000 in cash and $8,000 in savings bonds from his grandparents’ safe.

Brett Strout pleaded guilty in Kennebec County Superior Court on Tuesday to burglary and theft. Each count carries up to 10 years in prison.

Police said Strout stole a safe from his grandparents’ home in Chelsea last September, pried it open with a crowbar and sledgehammer and then spent much of the money on an OxyContin binge.

Strout’s attorney said he is undergoing counseling. Sentencing will take place this summer.
