DOVER-FOXCROFT – Nonprofits in the area are offering a series of events to honor their volunteers during National Volunteer Recognition Week, April 28-May 3.
Volunteers from 11 organizations can enjoy healthful and entertaining events sponsored by the partnering organizations. The week will culminate in a Volunteer Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Mayo Regional Hospital.
In previous years, each organization prepared its own event to recognize volunteers. Since many volunteers also give time to other organizations, planners decided this year to combine the celebrations.
“Volunteers are the backbone of this community,” said Pam Tower, AmeriCorps member and volunteer coordinator for the Center Theatre and Womancare.
Collaborating on the Volunteer Week are the Center Theatre, Mayo Regional Hospital, Womancare, Pine Tree Hospice, Rape Response, Penquis, RSVP, Thompson Free Library, Project Linus, the Piscataquis Regional YMCA and the Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society.
The public also is invited to the fair, which will be a chance to learn about volunteer opportunities in the community. There will be refreshments as well as raffles and door prizes available to those attending.
