Center Drive School

ORRINGTON – Appointments are being scheduled for a school visit on Friday, May 9, at the Center Drive School for children entering kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year.

Residents of Orrington with a child who will be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15 are asked to call the school office at 825-3697 to make an appointment.

Penobscot Job Corps Academy

BANGOR – In March, Penobscot Job Corps Academy was the host for the statewide SkillsUSA Competition in which 34 of its students participated. Sixteen of those students took bronze or silver medals and 10 won gold medals. The top five gold medalists were selected to represent the school at the national competition in Kansas City in June.

The school also won the

SkillsUSA Spirit Award for team work, spirit and drive.

In order for academy students to go to Kansas City, they need to raise $12,000. To that end, the academy will hold a community dinner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the school. The school’s culinary students will prepare the meal. The cost for the meal is $8. There is no admission charge to bid on silent auction items.

The school’s carpentry students are building Adirondack chairs, its welding students are creating metal sculpture and area businesses and individuals have donated items – all for a silent auction.

Homeschool workshops

BANGOR – Challenger Learning Center of Maine will conduct these workshops:

. The Geology of Mars, 9-10:30 a.m. May 3. Use a microscope to examine simulated Mars soil.

. Craters on the Moon, 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 3. Take part in a hands-on lesson about the unique features of the moon.

The cost of each workshop is $15. Preregistration is required by calling 990-2900, ext. 4.

Colleges

Animal Wellness Expo

BANGOR – Students in the University College of Bangor’s veterinary technician program will hold an Animal Wellness Expo 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, outside and inside Camden Hall on the college campus off Maine Avenue adjacent to Bangor International Airport.

During the event, students will offer free services for pets, including bathing, ear cleaning and nail trimming. Educational activities will include a training demonstration provided by Green Acres Kennel, an Adoption Fair hosted by the rescue groups Save Our Strays and the Animal Orphanage, and a rabies clinic with rabies vaccinations given at a cost of $5.

The veterinary technician program is the only such program offered in the state. After graduation from the two-year program, graduates often go on to work as veterinary technicians, wildlife rehabilitators, animal control officers, humane society directors, kennel managers, horse trainers and veterinary medical supply company representatives.

The Animal Wellness Expo was initially scheduled for Saturday, April 12, but it was postponed due to a forecast of rain.

Johnson and Wales University

These area students were named to the dean’s list for the winter term at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I.:

. Nicole Pineo of Eddington, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in sports entertainment event management.

. Lauren Jellison of Brewer, who is pursuing an associate degree in culinary arts.

Merrimack College

BANGOR – Hannah Riley of Bangor was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass.

University of New England

HERMON – Tracey Durkovich, daughter of Andrew and Joanne Durkovich of Hermon, will graduate on June 7 from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford as a doctor of osteopathy. She has been accepted into the four-year internship and residency program in ophthalmology at Mill Creek Community Hospital in Erie, Pa.

Durkovich graduated as valedictorian of the Hermon High School Class of 1999 and attended the University of Maine, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, summa cum laude, in 2003.

While at the University of Maine, Durkovich was elected to membership in Alpha Lamda Delta national honor society for first-year students; Golden Key International Honour Society, which recognizes scholastic achievement and excellence among college students in all academic disciplines; and Phi Beta Kappa Society, honoring academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.

Dean’s list

ORONO – Mary Molnar of Bangor was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at the University of Maine.

Defense contract

ORONO – U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced recently that the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a contract of up to $12.9 million to Maine Secure Deposits of Orono at the University of Maine for the development and construction of secure cargo containers known as composite anti-tamper containers. The work will be performed in Orono and is expected to be completed by April 2013.
