USM softball ousted from LEC tourney

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The University of Southern Maine dropped games to Rhode Island College and Plymouth State on Friday and was eliminated in the first round of the Little East Conference tournament.

Rhode Island College won the first game 6-3 and Plymouth State took the second game 8-6.

In Game 1, the Anchorwomen’s three-run third provided the winning margin.

Donielle Mattoon doubled and singled to pace Rhode Island College.

Stacey Stuart led the Huskies of Gorham with two singles and an RBI.

In Game 2, the Panthers tallied 15 hits and took advantage of five USM errors.

Kay LaBrie paced Plymouth State with a double and three singles.

Anita Dixon, Sabrina Sevigny and Stuart singled twice apiece for USM.

Colby sweeps UMPI

At Waterville, Christine Gillespie knocked in a run with a single in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 5 and later scored the game-winner as Colby knocked off UMaine-Presque Isle 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Mules took the nightcap 10-0.

In the opener, Gillespie added a two-run single.

Erica Davis and Brittany Humphrey homered for UMPI.

In the second game, Alyssa Lepore knocked two doubles as Colby prevailed in five innings.

Davis singled twice for UMPI.

Bates sweeps UMF

At Farmington, Bates College of Lewiston strung together 24 runs and 31 hits in sweeping the University of Maine-Farmington 5-3 and 19-6.

In the first game, Brian Buckley’s two-run double highlighted a three-run sixth inning for the Bobcats.

Corey Provencher had two singles and an RBI for the Beavers while Josh Garneau hit an RBI single.

In the second game, Bangor’s Gordy Webb hit a home run, a double and two singles with five RBIs to power Bates.

Mitch Bean’s three-run homer paced UMF. Phineas Peake added three singles.

At Standish, the Monks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn the victory.

Dustin Spiller had three singles and two RBIs to pace Saint Joseph’s. Wade Oliver doubled and singled (RBI) and Andrew Wood singled and had an RBI.

Ryan Jones led Keene State with a triple and two singles.

Tyler Delaney and A.J. Pennartz of Birch Harbor had UMPI’s only hits, both singles.
