UMBC sweeps UMaine softball Black Bears fail to reach playoffs

ORONO – Ashley Gray pitched a one-hitter, despite walking seven, and struck out four Sunday as the University of Maryland Baltimore County completed its America East softball series sweep of the University of Maine with a 10-0 victory at Kessock Field.

The Retrievers also won both of Saturday’s games, 3-2 and 6-2, to eliminate the Black Bears from postseason contention.

In Saturday’s first game, Dana Shepherd and Gray homered to pace the Retrievers.

Terren Hall hit a two-run home run for Maine and Alexis Souhlaris doubled and singled.

In Saturday’s second game, Gray homered and doubled with two runs scored for UMBC. Shepherd and Lauren Brummell each had a triple and two singles. Kali Shirk homered and singled.

Stephanie George paced Maine with a solo home run and Ashley Waters added two singles.

In Sunday’s game, Shirk had a home run and two singles with three RBIs for UMBC.

Ashley Waters singled for Maine’s lone hit.

Colby, Saint Joseph’s split

At Waterville, Alex Essman hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help lead Colby College to the 7-1 victory over Saint Joseph’s College of Standish in Saturday’s opening game. The Monks took the second game 9-5.

In the first game, Carlie Minichino added a two-run home run and a double for the Mules. Lizzi Fort and Christine Gillespie hit back-to-back doubles.

Megan Farrell doubled and scored a run to lead the Monks. Alysn Ludwig singled twice.

In the second game, Alyssa Dunn had a three-run home run in the first inning for Saint Joseph’s. Jillian Kimball had three runs and two RBIs.

Gillespie tripled and doubled to lead Colby.

Southern Maine earns sweep

At Gorham Saturday, Ryan Pike’s two-run triple highlighted a three-run eighth inning as the University of Southern Maine knocked off Western Connecticut State 12-10 in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader.

The Huskies won the nightcap, which was called due to darkness after eight innings, 9-5.

In the opener, Chris Burleson gave the Huskies some insurance with an RBI single in the eighth. USM led 5-0 at one point but trailed 9-8 going into the home half of the sixth.

Zack Dandrea hit a two-run single to put Western Connecticut on top in the sixth.

In the nightcap, Eddie Skeffington and Collin Henry each hit an RBI single and Ryan Gaffney stroked a two-run single to key a five-run outburst in the fourth for USM.

After the visitors tied it in the sixth, the Huskies pushed across four in the seventh, keyed by Andrew Stacy’s RBI double.

Matt Gardiner knocked a solo homer for WCSU.

At Lyndon Center, Vt., the Hornets raced out to an 8-0 first-inning lead then held on to beat UMaine-Presque Isle Saturday.

Matt Lapham had four singles and two RBIs for the winners.

A.J. Pennartz had three singles and a two-run homer for the Owls.

Amherst sweeps Saint Joseph’s

At Amherst, Mass., Amherst College took a pair from Saint Joseph’s of Standish on Saturday, winning the first game 11-4 and the second game 4-1.

In the first game, the Lord Jeffs plated five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to break it open.

Nat Pedley knocked an RBI double for Amherst.

Ben Grant-Roy led the Monks with a single and two RBIs.

In the second game, Pedley knocked in three runs on a triple and a single to lift Amherst.

Saint Joseph’s was held to four hits. Wade Oliver, Brian Schools, Andrew Wood and Nick Johnson all singled.
