2 taken to jail in Brewer knife incident

BREWER – Two men ended up in jail late Tuesday afternoon after an incident involving a knife and Mace in the parking lot of Twin City Plaza on State Street in Brewer.

Around 3:45 p.m. police received a call saying multiple people were fighting with knives in the parking lot.

According to police, when two alleged victims showed up to retrieve money they said was owed to them, William Sibley, 33, a transient previously of Bangor, got into an argument with one of them.

“Sibley brandished a knife and threatened to ‘stick’ [one of the victims],” Brewer police Sgt. Richard Smith said. “The victim pulled some pepper spray out of his pocket and proceeded to spray Sibley with it.”

Sibley had begun to get out of the vehicle he was in and the victim ran to a nearby business and told employees there to call police.

Hearing that police would be called, David Ackley, 28, of Old Town also got out of the vehicle and both he and Sibley ran to nearby businesses in the shopping plaza.

Sibley was found in the OHI restroom trying to wash his face, while Ackley ran into Winterport Boot, Smith said.

“[Ackley] walked in and the police were five seconds behind him,” said Al Hersey, a Winterport Boot employee.

At least one customer and a few employees were in the store at the time, but no one was injured.

Hersey said the police were very professional and put Ackley in handcuffs before walking him out the door to a waiting cruiser.

“He admitted to having a knife,” Hersey said. Smith later confirmed that both men had knives.

At the scene, as police tried to sort out the men’s stories, Ackley was placed in the police cruiser. On the hood of the cruiser were a container of Mace, a pack of cigarettes, a lighter, and a container of prescription medication.

Smith later said Ackley was arrested on a warrant and possession of Schedule Y drugs, and also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia for the crack pipe police found in his possession.

With Ackley in custody, Sibley continued to pace back and forth in front of the boot shop while police interviewed witnesses, Sibley and the victims.

“That hurt,” Sibley said leaning on the hood of one of the cruisers. “I’ve never been Maced before.”

He continued to pace and ramble to the police, stating a few times that he was “so wound up.”

“I want it prosecuted to the fullest extent,” Sibley said.

Brewer Ambulance personnel flushed Sibley’s eyes. Later, while waiting for police, Sibley became agitated and told police he needed more water to flush his eyes out and that he was “blind.” The ambulance was called to come back, but Sibley refused to go to the hospital. Instead, the responders flushed his eyes again.

When confronted by police a short time later with information that had been provided by witnesses saying that Sibley had brandished a knife, Sibley said, “I don’t play with knives.”

Despite the denial, he was placed in handcuffs and charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, Smith said.

Both men, who each have a criminal history, were taken to Penobscot County Jail where they remained Tuesday night.
