FORT KENT – Staffers from U.S. Sen. Olympia J. Snowe’s office will conduct a workshop today in Fort Kent to provide information regarding disaster assistance to business owners and homeowners affected by the recent floods.

The workshop begins at 3 p.m. in the Athletic Center at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

Snowe’s office said that once a disaster is declared by the federal government, the Small Business Administration will be able to offer a wide range of tools – such as low-interest, below-market-rate loans – to build new structures, clean up damage, and mitigate against future disasters. The loans will be made available to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, as well as private nonprofit organizations with property damaged by the disaster.

When a disaster is declared by the president, disaster victims also should register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency by calling (800) 621-FEMA.
