Mitchell mum on candidates

Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell is a designated superdelegate for the state of New York, meaning his vote at the Democratic National Convention this summer could be pivotal to determining whether Sen. Barack Obama or Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the party’s presidential nomination.

In a recent interview with CBS News anchorwoman Katie Couric, Mitchell said he had been contacted by supporters of both Obama, who won the Democratic caucuses in Maine, and Clinton, who won the primary in New York state, trying to persuade him to support the winning candidate in those states.

On Tuesday, Mitchell declined to reveal which candidate he supports.
