Seven plead not guilty in Maine cocaine ring

BANGOR – Seven members of an alleged cocaine distribution ring arrested in Maine on federal drug charges pleaded not guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

The seven were among 11 people indicted last year by a federal grand jury for their alleged roles in a cocaine distribution ring that brought more than 10 pounds of cocaine into Penobscot County. The organization appears to have stretched from Alaska, Florida and Rhode Island to the Maine towns of Lincoln and Lee.

Details about the operation that allegedly operated between January 2002 and May 2006 were not available Tuesday afternoon.

Bail hearings for the seven arrested Tuesday in Maine are scheduled to be held on Thursday and Friday. More information is expected to be available at those proceedings.

Because information about three other defendants who live out of state was unsealed Tuesday afternoon along with the indictment, they most likely were arrested Monday or Tuesday, but have not yet been brought to Maine.

The name of one defendant was blacked out in the indictment that was unsealed Tuesday, most likely because he or she remains at large.

Charges against the 11 defendants include conspiracy to distribute cocaine, conspiracy to engage in money laundering and Social Security fraud. Some defendants face all three charges while others have been charged only as part of the drug conspiracy.

It could not be determined Tuesday why the defendants were not arrested in November after they were indicted by a federal grand jury and arrest warrants were issued.

The 10 identified defendants in the case are:

Michael Mayer, 54, of Jupiter, Fla., and Costa Rica.

Laurent “Larry” Provost, 60, Woonsocket, R.I.

Daniel “Danny” Littlefield, 49, Lee.

Troy Littlefield, 42, Oakfield.

Richard “Rat” Russell, 48, Lincoln.

Donald “Donnie” Russell, 50, Lincoln.

Robert Donath, 28, Lincoln,

Brent “Cowboy” Noyes, 57, Lincoln.

Jeffrey Polk, 35, Anchorage, Alaska.

Preston Chubbuck, 43, Springfield.
