It will cost big bucks to demolish the Waldo-Hancock Bridge. Although it was replaced because of heavy vehicular traffic inadequacies, it is probably very able to be used like some historic European bridges: as a site for small shops, leased out by the state to small business ventures during the tourist season.
The observatory in the tower of the new bridge already attracts visitors. Why not increase the attraction for the area with shops selling Maine-made products, and the summertime smell of onion rings in the sky?
