THOMASTON – Rep. Christopher W. Rector, R-Thomaston, has announced that he will seek election to the Senate District 22 seat being vacated by Sen. Christine R. Savage, R-Union, who is leaving because of Maine’s term limit law.
A three-term representative, Rector is the ranking minority member of the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee and says he supports local economic development and postsecondary educational access, especially a community college system for Knox County residents. He spearheaded the Many Flags education legislation and has been involved in the Marine Systems Training Center in Thomaston.
“Access to a postsecondary education is critical today,” he said. “We’re 90 minutes from any community college in any direction. Kennebec Community College [in Fairfield] would have a presence on our proposed Many Flags, One Campus, site, and a lot of jobs created from education programs would be well-paying trade jobs.”
A member of the Knox-Waldo Regional Economic Development Council, Rector said he believes in a strong relationship between education and economic growth.
Rector voted for LD 2175, the legislation that raised the debt limit to allow for innovative school construction projects that would prepare the way for a Many Flags school.
A graduate of the University of Southern Maine, Rector and his wife of 32 years, Betsy, have two sons. The couple own two businesses, Camden Cone in Camden and Bayview Press in Thomaston.
