Hundreds march for fallen police officer

PORTLAND – Hundreds of police officers and firefighters marched in a somber procession Friday to bid farewell to a Portland police sergeant who died of injuries he suffered when his service revolver discharged accidentally.

Hundreds of residents lined the streets to watch as the procession made its way to Woodfords Congregational Church, where Robert Johnsey was remembered for his compassion, positive attitude and generosity.

His 11-year-old son, A.J. Johnsey, told the crowd that his father was “one of the best cops in the history of law enforcement.”

Johnsey, 37, died Monday night after his handgun discharged and wounded him in the leg. He was a nine-year veteran of the Portland Police Department.

Two funds have been set up for Johnsey’s family. One is a scholarship fund for Johnsey’s two children; the other will help with funeral expenses.
