Hutchins legs out win over Cony for Brewer

BREWER – Caleb Smith’s sacrifice fly in the sixth scored pinch-runner Colby Hutchins and gave Brewer a 3-2 baseball win over Cony of Augusta at Heddericg Field Friday.

John Thoms opened the sixth with a single and Hutchins came in to run. Hutchins stole second and third before scoring on Smith’s sacrifice fly.

Smith had a triple to go with his sacrifice fly, Greg Higgins had a run-scoring double and Shun Sasaki had a sacrifice fly.

Senior righty Greg Higgins pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk. Ray Cotnoir’s RBI double and Taylor Boutin’s RBI single highlighted a two-run fifth-inning rally that tied it for Cony.

Mike Poulin doubled for the Rams. Jacob Beland and Eric Lee combined on a five-hitter.

At Millinocket, senior righty Jared Manzo tossed a three-hitter, striking out 11 and not walking anybody, as Stearns topped Houlton.

Garren Manzo and Cory Barnett drove in two runs each as Manzo doubled and singled and Barnett singled twice. Justin Pelkey chipped in with a pair of singles and an RBI.

Levi Prosser, Parker Brown and Josh Harvey singled for Houlton.

At Milo, Ethan Babineau hit two doubles and drove in three runs to lift Penobscot Valley of Howland over Penquis.

Aaron Saucier doubled twice for the Howlers and Dylan Thompson added a double and a single with an RBI.

Jesse McLaughlin led Penquis with a double and a single.

At East Millinocket, Andy Kay allowed no runs on four hits and one walk while striking out nine to lead Katahdin of Stacyville past Schenck.

Josh Guiggey singled three times for Cougars. Kay hit two doubles and Cody Cunningham added two singles.

Trevor Violette doubled and singled to lead Schenck and Tyrell Davis hit a double.

At Pittsfield, Ethan West hit a grand slam in the third inning to help lead Maine Central Institute past Waterville.

Faxon McLaughlin had a double and two singles with an RBI for MCI. Andy Shorey added two singles.

Josh Gaudette paced Waterville with a double and a single and two RBIs. Eli Fitzgerald and Tim Locke each had a double and two singles.

At Dexter, senior righty Ethan Woodman allowed a lead-off single to Joe Johnson to open the game and didn’t allow another hit to lead Dexter.

Rick Stewart doubled home a third-inning run and Gavin Cote added a two-run single in the fifth for the Tigers.

Stewart had a single to go with his double and A.J. McGowan doubled.

At Hampden, Brennan Perry’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth scored Josh Tardiff with the winning run for the Broncos.

Perry and Jacob Moore also combined to pitch a one-hitter, with Perry striking out 11 and walking six over the first six innings.

Tardiff had two singles and an RBI for Hampden, while Patrick Stephens also singled.

Cory LaRue’s RBI double in the third inning was Edward Little’s lone hit.

Courtney Putnam hit an rBI single for Houlton and Nikki Eastman singled.

At East Millinocket, Kayla Stevens hit two singles and scored four runs to give Katahdin of Stacyville the win over Schenck.

Melissa Duffy also singled twice for the Katahdin Cougars.

Emily Finson hit an RBI double to pace Schenck. Tricia Hobbs and Ashley Deloge singled.

At Milo, junior Erica Lyford allowed just one run on two hits and no walks while striking out 11 to lead Penquis past Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Christin McKenzie doubled and singled and knocked in two runs for the Patriots. Holly Smith had two singles and two RBIs and Kayla Webb added two singles.

Molly Thompson led the Howlers with a double and Casey McCloskey added a single.

At Pittsfield, Maine Central Institute jumped to an early lead and the Huskies made it stand up against Waterville.

Kelsey Gagnon scored on a Paige Gardiner single in the third inning for Waterville.

At Bangor, Amy Wadleigh struck out 10 and walked just two in a complete-game pitching performance as the Rams earned their seventh win.

Wadleigh also doubled, singled twice and drove home two runs, while Jeri Cosgrove singled twice and Kate Freudenberger tripled.

Mardi Artis doubled and singled for Brunswick.

At Hamdpen, senior Lacey Littlefield allowed three hits and one walk while striking out 12 to earn her fifth shutout as Hampden Academy defeated Edward Little of Auburn.

Ashley Gott hit a double, single and two-run homer to pace the Broncos. Brittany Luetjen had two singles and an RBI.

Alyssa Levesque, Morgan Hussar and Becca Witten singled for Edward Little.

At Brewer, Meghan McLain scored Amy Adams and Jaimee Knowles with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to lead Brewer past previously unbeaten Cony of Augusta.

Brewer’s Sarah Risser tripled and scored in the first inning off of a Dominique DeFilipp sacrifice bunt. Mel Judkins recorded 10 strikeouts for the Witches.

Amy Jones hit an RBI double in the third for Cony and Liz Barker followed with an RBI single in the fourth. Jasmine Trott had 10 strikeouts.
