PORTLAND – Maine’s largest city is trying to decide whether to ban smoking at outdoor cafes.

Residents gave an earful Thursday night to the city’s Health and Recreation Committee, which is considering a proposal to ban smoking in outdoor seating areas where food is served.

Committee Chairman Dan Skolnik said people are passionate on both sides of the debate.

Another proposal, which received unanimous support at the hearing, would make a resolution proclaiming all playgrounds and athletic facilities as smoke-free into an official ordinance.
