Castleton sweeps Husson Spartans win NAC, earn NCAA berth

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – Brad Polcare went 10 for 13 with two home runs, a triple and two doubles to lead top-ranked Castleton (Vt.) State to the North Atlantic Conference baseball championship by sweeping No. 4 Husson College 10-6 and 22-2 in the championship round at East Field on Saturday.

The win sends the 22-18 Spartans to the NCAA Division III New England Regional, while Husson finishes its season at 16-23.

Polcare, Castleton State’s leadoff hitter, also had eight RBIs and scored eight runs as the Spartans swept a Husson team that entered Saturday’s play needing just one victory to win the conference crown.

In the first game, Husson scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to forge a 6-6 tie, with a three-run double by Dennis Graham the key blow.

But Castleton State scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to surge to victory.

Polcare had a double, four singles, three runs scored and three RBIs for Castleton State, while Nick Arthers singled twice for Husson and Graham, Ethan Guerette and Tom Crews each added a double.

In the second game, Rob Turner and Mitch Thresher combined to hold Husson scoreless until the eighth inning while the Castleton State offense amassed 22 runs on 27 hits against five Husson pitchers.

The Spartans scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead, then added a single run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth before sending 15 batters to the plate during an 11-run explosion in the sixth.

Polcare, the tournament’s most valuable player, hit for the cycle in the final game with two home runs a triple, double and single.

Husson scored twice in the eighth inning on solo home runs by Chris Maguire and Graham. Jeff Miller added two doubles for the Eagles, while Graham also singled and Guerette singled twice.
