HERMON – Hermon’s Kris Watson has attained an unusual level of consistency.
The 27-year-old has won every heat race and every feature in the Super Street class this season and that included two wins on a double race card on Sunday at Speedway 95.
In addition to Sunday’s five features, there were five makeup features from an earlier card that was postponed due to rain. There was also a Mini-Cup race.
Watson’s second triumph of the day came in the 50-lap opener of a three-race CAM II Racing Fuels series.
He led from start to finish and had no trouble pulling away on restarts, including a lap-39 restart.
“He’s fast,” said Sullivan’s Richard Burrill, who finished second, 20 car-lengths behind Watson.
“The car has been dialed in from the first day. The car has been real good,” said Watson referring to his 1979 Camaro. “Running the [Pro All-Stars Series] tour last year helped a lot. I learned how to drive a car [better].”
Watson ran in the Sportsman class on the PASS tour last season and said they used softer tires than he had been using at Speedway 95.
“The softer tires have a lot more grip so I’m using them [at Speedway 95] this year,” said Watson.
He also credited his crew for playing an important role in his confidence.
Bucksport’s Artie Maguire finished third with Franklin’s Mike Overlock and Winterport’s Joey Doyon rounding out the top five.
Burrill and Maguire were making their 2008 debuts.
“My car was a little loose,” said Burrill, who was satisfied with his finish.
So was Maguire.
“I was very happy with a third in our maiden voyage,” said Maguire.
Watson had won the makeup feature by the same margin over Derek Mingo of Lamoine. Travis Beal of Winterport was third with Overlock and Maguire completing the top five.
In the 50-lap Pro Limited makeup feature, an apologetic Shane Clark of Winterport inherited the lead on lap 43 when he spun leader Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs and went on to post his first victory in four years of racing.
“It was 100 percent my fault,” said Clark. “I feel bad about it. I didn’t mean to do it. I tried to get to the top [groove] and went up too quickly and slid up under him. I hadn’t cleared him yet.”
“I gave him the whole bottom groove,” said Seekins, who had spun leader Josh St. Clair of Liberty in a similar incident on lap 41.
The outside groove is the faster and preferred one at Speedway 95.
Seekins rallied to finish second followed by Scott Modery of Hermon, Glenn Curtis of Hudson and Josh St. Clair.
The second Pro Limited feature was won decisively by Brenton Parritt of Steuben, who was half a track-length better than Curtis. Modery was third with Josh St. Clair fourth and his grandfather, Dave St. Clair finishing fifth.
Belfast’s Spencer Garvin was credited with the win in the first Sport-Fours feature when winner Phil Richardson of Carmel was disqualified because Glenburn’s Chris Ryan had qualified the car in the heat race and they didn’t mention the driver change to track officials.
Glenburn’s Steve Moulton was second, followed by Old Town’s Jason Trundy, Hampden’s David Green and Hermon’s Duane Dunifer.
Green won the second feature, followed by Moulton, Trundy, Old Town’s David Shorey and Garvin.
Richardson had crossed the finish line second by 11/2 car-lengths but was disqualified because his car was underweight.
In the Strictly Streets, Glenburn’s Jordan Pearson appeared to be on his way to a third feature win on the day but slid off the track in some Speedi-Dri while leading with three laps remaining.
That enabled Brad Norris of Ellsworth to take the checkered flag. Glenburn’s Derek Pearson was third, Stockton Springs’ Harry Patterson was third, Jordan Pearson wound up fourth and Shane Hamel II of Bangor was fifth.
Pearson won the makeup feature with Wayne Parritt Jr. of Steuben taking second, Norris was third, Derek Pearson finished fourth and Hamel was fifth.
Pearson had also won the first Full-Sized Trucks series race followed by Holden’s Peter Drake, Winterport’s Ernie Wallace, Hampden’s Dana Harlow and Clifton’s Jim Carr Jr.
In the second Trucks feature, Wallace triumphed despite being spun out early in the race and then being assessed a black-flag caution for his aggressive driving as he sought retribution after being spun out.
Jordan Pearson was second with Drake finishing third, Harlow coming home fourth and Hermon’s Brett Crosby rounding out the top five.
In the Mini-Cup feature for miniature Sprint Cup cars, Howland’s Francis Bernard, in a Jeff Gordon replica, cruised to comfortable 30 car-length victory.
Fred Ireland, also of Howland, was second with North Anson’s R.J. Pinkham, Howland’s Josh Ireland and Carmel’s Tony McLaughlin completing the top five.
Josh Ireland is Fred’s son.
