Over the years, we have felt gratitude and admiration for the Bangor troop greeters. Their patriotism and service are remarkable. In the wake of Mr. Stephen King’s recent callous comments, we were truly grieved to see that the greeters decided to continue promoting and providing his materials to the troops passing through Bangor.
At a time when some in the media would like us to believe that what we heard isn’t really what we hear, we believe they should have stood by their first (and, correct) convictions. Are we to conclude that as long as one is philanthropic (as Mr. King, notably is), insensitive statements are easily excused? It appears that Mr. King’s opinions are more valuable than the feelings for t he troops and their families.
