KITTERY – The Maine Marine Patrol will take up the search Thursday for a 46-year-old Maine lobsterman missing and presumed drowned when his boat capsized in waters near the New Hampshire line.

The Coast Guard ended its search for Christopher Tobey on Monday night, but marine patrol Sgt. Rick Laflamme said 8- to 10-foot seas in the area made it too dangerous to begin recovery operations Tuesday.

Instead, according to Laflamme, the search by divers, small boats and aircraft will get under way Thursday.

Tobey, his 16-year-old son and another crew member were tossed into the frigid Atlantic on Sunday when their boat capsized. The teen and crewman made it to Duck Island on the Isles of Shoals and were rescued Monday.

Officials said the three started swimming together when thrown from the boat, the 40-foot Sav-A-Buck out of Kittery, as it was struck by a large wave. The three were not wearing life jackets.

Laflamme said Duck Island and the area where the boat went down is on the Maine side of the border.
