Say yes to development

It was with great sadness that I read the story about Bangor Hydro sending out disconnect notices to nearly half its customers. After realizing the magnitude of the economic state we are in, I had to wonder, where did the Sierra Club go?

They certainly were here when the Big A Hydro Dam, which would have provided inexpensive electricity, was proposed. They also were here in 1987 when the closure of Maine Yankee was suggested. And they were certainly quick to cut checks to attorneys to save the salamanders on Sears Island, which was part of a cargo port proposal that would have provided many paying jobs in Waldo County. Now that electricity costs in Maine have reached a crisis, where is the check to Bangor Hydro to help keep 46,000 Mainers from losing their electricity?

It’s time to build the Big A Hydro Dam and provide inexpensive, renewable power to eastern and central Maine. It’s time to build a new Maine Yankee out of the ashes of the old one. It’s also time to build the Sears Island cargo port because if we build it, the ships will come. It’s also time to build a refinery near Machias so we have usable fuel in the region.

And finally, it’s time to build the east-west highway for transportation, put an ethanol plant in Caribou for fuel viability, and rebuild our railroads to haul commodities.
