USM, St. Joseph’s beaten in regional

HARWICH, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College and the University of Southern Maine each lost their first-round baseball games at an NCAA Division III regional Wednesday.

In the first game, Western New England College plated two runs in the top of the 12th inning to edge USM 8-6. In the afternoon game, Keene State College had a much easier time with the Saint Joe’s, beating the Monks of Standish 6-1.

Both teams are in must-win mode today. The USM Huskies take on Castleton State at 9:30 a.m. and Saint Joseph’s plays at 1 p.m.

In the first game, Joe Griglun had two singles, a double and three RBIs, and drove in the game-tying run in the top of the ninth where the Golden Bears rallied for three runs, and another in the 12th.

Eddie Skeffington paced the Huskies with two singles and two solo home runs while Josh Mackey pounded out four singles. Anthony D’Alfonso doubled and stroked an RBI single while Ryan Pike added an RBI single.

In the second game, Jamie Morin pitched a four-hitter and notched 13 strikeouts with three walks to handcuff the Monks.

Ian Lee led the Monks with an RBI double in the ninth.
